Australian Pink DiamondsAustralian Pink Diamonds Astound In Beauty

To the untrained eye, an Australian pink diamond may look like play jewelry, but in fact it is one of the most stunning and valuable types of diamonds in the world. Very few regions of the world produce quality diamonds and not all of those regions produce pink diamonds. Australian pink diamonds are popular around the world for their brilliance, size and color. Often referred to as Australian Argyle Diamonds, which is the name of the mine they originate.

Unearthing Beauty

The Australian pink diamonds are in the far north region of the western portion of the country in the Kimberley region. The Argyle Diamond Mine is located more than 2000 kilometers from Perth, the largest city in the region. The area was remote. The diamonds were not discovered until the early 1970's. The region was not unknown for diamonds. In fact, in the area of Pilbara, located some distance away, it was not uncommon to discover diamonds. They were first recorded in the 1890's in that region. But, at that time, there was little evidence of where the diamonds were coming from and no significant reserve was found. In the early 1970's, this changed when one of the most significant finds of diamonds was uncovered in Smoke Creek, a small city at the time.

In the 1970's, scientists worked to find the large reserve of diamonds they knew were in Australia. It was not until 1972 that the region was narrowed to the Kimberly region. After many failed attempts at locating the largest source of diamonds, it was in 1979 that geologists finally found the Argyle Diamond pipe and the largest find of diamonds on the continent.

Before understanding bit more about Australian pink diamonds, consider what this mine was truly like. The mine first started to be mined in 1983 through an open cut mine process. The main plant was not commissioned until two years later. Still, in that time, some 15 million carats of alluvial diamonds had been pulled from the Argyle mine. Today, this mine is large and helps to make Australia the largest producer of diamonds. In 1986, 29 million carats were produced and in 1994, 35 million carats had been pulled from the mine. This number continues to grow.

Today, the Argyle Diamond Mine produces about 35 million carats per year. From what is drawn from the mind, about 45 percent are near gem quality diamonds and 50 percent is industry quality diamonds. The remaining five percent are the rare, Australian pink diamonds that are highly valued and considered some of the most important gems in the world.  There is also a small percentage of rich cognac diamonds and champagne diamonds that make up that five remaining percent.

Australian Pink Diamonds Dazzle Worldwide

The rare Australian pink diamond has not failed to dazzle the world. The Argyle diamonds fall into one of three categories. They may be white diamonds, champagne diamonds or pink diamonds. There are many things that help this mine to stand apart from others. One aspect of the diamonds themselves that is unique is that they are harder than diamonds that are found in any other area of the world. This comes from the diamond's unique atomic structure. All diamonds have a similar diamond atomical make up, but the Argyle diamonds have a structure in which the atoms are bonded together in a more complex arrangement. Because of this unique make up, the diamonds do have their more brilliant colors. The Australian pink diamonds in particular have a very deep coloring, which is unlike any other pink diamond found in other regions of the world.

Another important factor that makes the Australian pink diamond unique is the way that the diamonds look under ultra violet light. These diamonds actually fluoresce blue under these lights. About 70 percent of the diamonds from this mine have this one of a kind benefit. In fact, when the mine experiences high amounts of ultra violet light, the entire mine has a beautiful blue coloring to it, almost shimmering in the light.

In addition, just like the rest of the diamonds in the world, Australian pink diamonds are rated by the four C's of color, carat, clarity and cut. But, unlike other diamonds, the Australian pink diamond is not downgraded in value due to color but rather rated higher the more dominate the pinks are.

Purchasing an Australian Pink Diamond

For those who would like to purchase the diamonds, it is possible to do so. As mentioned, these diamonds are rare, especially those which are finer in quality. Therefore, you are likely to pay a substantial amount of money for them. Yet, quality does matter and these diamonds will not disappoint anyone.

The diamonds are refined in Perth, Australia after leaving the mine, to various stages. They are then sold directly in Australia through Australian jewelers. They are also shipped internationally. The only Argyle Mine representatives to receive these diamonds directly are Antwerp, Bombay, India and Belgium. Some small sized diamonds are sent overseas in rough form, but this is not the most common process.

For those wishing to own them, purchase from a highly qualified dealer. There is no doubt the Australian pink diamonds will dazzle anyone who sees them (or is lucky enough to own them.) They are a long lasting statement gift and they are to be highly respected for the treasure that they are.

Designer Engagement Rings

Designer Engagement RingA designer engagement ring may be just what she is hoping for, but you may be wondering just what it is. Jewelers often use this term to refer to any type of diamond that they set for you. In other words, they will take the lose diamonds and set it into the ring that you select. This process is also often called customized designer engagement rings since the buyer has a lot of range in choosing what he or she would like in the stone and ring.

Famous or Not So Much?

There are many different options to choose from when it comes to designer engagement rings. If you are looking for a lower-end product, you can choose a designer ring as described above, in which the jeweler sets the diamond of your selection into the ring that you wish to have it put into. On the other hand, you may want something a bit more elaborate and what is often referred to as a true designer engagement ring. These rings have a design by a well-known or "famous" jeweler.

Of course, with a well known designer you have the higher quality and the true style of choice. This is a type of ring you likely do not have much control over, except for sizing. They are sometimes one of a kind and set by the very best jewelers in the world. It may be that you are after a Calla Cut or an Art Carved ring, for example. These are good choices in terms of famous engagement ring designers.

Buying Designer Means Doing Your Homework

Before you head off to purchase a designer engagement ring, do consider some important points.

  • Be sure that the ring comes from a reputable jeweler who can verify its authenticity.
  • If purchasing a true designer engagement ring, from a high-end designer, be sure it too has its documentation to prove its mark.
  • Know as much as you can about these diamonds. In particular, you should know about the four C's (carat, cut, clarity and color) and how a diamond is valued. If you are purchasing from a local retailer, learn how to look at a diamond up close and notice its flaws, or lack thereof.
  • Price out your options but keep in mind that every single diamond is different. Just because the size is the same does not mean that the value is the same.
  • Be sure she loves what you are offering! If she hasn't selected a style, you may wish to include her in this process. There may be a designer ring that she would love to own or even has her heart set on.

Do you need to go with a designer engagement ring? If you wish to have more control over the diamond you invest in, a customized designer is the best route to take. For those who wish to have a higher value and perhaps have fallen in love with the work of a particular diamond artist, then this too can mean buying high end.

You do not have to buy a designer engagement ring, especially if there is another ring that is loved more so. Yet, there is something fun and magical about knowing that you are wearing the only true ring that is in that shape, cut, and setting. Invest in top quality. Go for the best that you can. Remember that this designer engagement ring represents your love for her and will forever be a mark of this moment in both of your lives.

The Most Expensive Diamond in the World

Do you wish to own the most expensive diamond in the world? Many people, including some of the world's most wealthy people would be happy to purchase such a treasured stone. Diamonds last forever, literally, and therefore investing in such a diamond is definitely a good way to seal a small fortune. Various stones around the world are highly valuable. There are a handful that range into the millions of dollars, though, and these may be a bit more of an investment than most people would be interested in making.

The most expensive diamond in the world is Sotheby's D Grade Flawless Diamond. It has some 108 carats and has a price at a princely $16 million. This diamond is the most expensive diamond in the world because of its fine quality at its very large size. While most diamonds that are larger are filled with flaws, you will not find any in this diamond. This beautiful white diamond is considered the best in terms of flawlessness.

There are other diamonds that are also top rated and nearly the most expensive diamonds in the world. The Mouawad Diamond Necklace, for example, is a highly valued piece of jewelry, though it is not just one stone. The largest stone is 70 carats. The necklace is made up of various colored diamonds and the large white diamond. It is priced at $12 million and is on display at London's Natural History Museum.

Another option is the Leviev Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond, priced at a mere $10 million. The stone itself is 77.12 carats and it has a rating as Fancy Vivid. That is the highest rating given to colored diamonds. The diamond is currently for sale and is the focal point of a necklace featuring numerous white diamonds.

If color is more your thing, do not forget the Graff Fancy Vivid Pink Pear Shaped Diamond which is rated highly for its amazing color. The diamond is priced at $10 million in value and has 13 carats. It currently has a mounting in a beautiful platinum ring and on either side of the set stone are pear shaped diamonds. The color of this stone is what has helped to raise its value.

Another pink diamond (some of the most expensive diamonds in the world due to their rarity) is the Harry Winston Fancy Intense Pink Diamond. It too is mounted into a ring and features two trapezoid diamonds on either side. What makes this diamond unique is that it has 100 percent pure pink color with very even distribution. This is very rare and for this reason, this mere 10.11-carat diamond is at a price at $8.3 million.

Perhaps pink is not your thing and you are more interested in green? If so, you will find it even more difficult to locate a diamond since this coloring is even harder to find on the market. The de Grisogono Green Diamond is one option. It has 25.06 carats and is valued at $7.3 million. It is set into a ring and features 382 black diamonds equaling seven full carats themselves, around it. What an amazing piece!

The most expensive diamonds in the world are hard to invest in not only because of their rarity in size and color but also because they are truly collector's items. They are often on display in high-end collections and held onto by some of the world's top jewelers and mine owners. Still, these are stones anyone could easily fall in love with, highly priced or not.
